How we remove popcorn ceilings
Test first
If your home was built before the mid-1980s, the ceiling gets tested for asbestos before any work starts.
Cover everything
Floors, furniture and doorways get covered so the rest of the house stays clean.
Sand it, don’t scrape it
Wand orbital sanders hooked to HEPA-filtered vacuums take the texture off and catch the dust at the sander.
Smooth it out
Dings, seams and rough spots get mudded and sanded so the ceiling is flat and smooth.
Prime and paint
Primer and fresh ceiling paint finish the job, if you want it ready to enjoy.
Why you can’t just scrape a popcorn ceiling
Our short explainer: why older ceilings get tested first, and why we sand instead of scrape.
Questions homeowners ask
Do popcorn ceilings have asbestos?
Some do. Popcorn texture from before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos, and you can’t tell by looking. That’s why older ceilings get tested before any work starts. If a test finds asbestos, removal needs a licensed asbestos abatement contractor, and we’ll tell you straight.
Is popcorn ceiling removal messy?
Not the way we do it. Instead of soaking and scraping, we sand the texture off with sanders hooked to HEPA-filtered vacuums, after covering your floors and furniture. There’s very little to no dust.
How much does popcorn ceiling removal cost?
It depends on the size of the room, the ceiling height and how much repair the ceiling needs underneath. Send a photo and the room size through the form for a free estimate.
How long does it take?
It depends on the size of the room and how much repair the ceiling needs once the texture is off. Your quote spells out the schedule before we start.
Can you paint the ceiling after?
Yes. We can smooth, prime and paint the ceiling so it’s finished and ready to enjoy.

Apex Interiors is insured, and we stand behind our work. If something isn’t right with our work within 30 days of completion, we’ll come back and make it right at no additional labor cost.
